joe biden goes head to head with congressman paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. of course, our anticipation is heightened by the loss that the champ took in round one on wednesday night. president obama pulled a lot of his punches in his debate with governor romney, so if the original strategy was for biden to go in with a soft touch against paul ryan, we can be sure that that is going out the window. he is coming out swinging. gloves off. now, romney was able to dodge blows against his economic plan because actually there's not much of a plan there to jab at. take his strategy for economic recovery, to fill the revenue gap for a result from tax cuts is an exercise in shadow boxing futility. he hasn't yet told us what it is he's planning to do. but by hitching his wagon to paul ryan and endorsing ryan's budget plan, he attached himself to clearly articulated policy and a record that leaves the whole ticket exposed to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice presi

a bit next week to the vice presidential nominees. paul ryan and joe biden will face off in their only debate next thursday night. paul ryan has just left his four-day debate camp. he is heading back to wisconsin for a fund-raiser tonight. and as for the vice president, we check in with msnbc news campaign embed carrie dan. she's embedded with vice president joe biden's team. carrie, vice president biden's schedule shows him to be in wilmington, delaware, right now, and for the next few days. what is planned for him? >> that's right, milissa. he's going to be doing his own debate camp there, up until a day before the debate. he's spending time with chris van hollen, that's his sparring partner. van hollen has worked with paul ryan, he's a democrat from maryland, who worked with ryan with and against on the house budget committee. so van hollen is someone who's very familiar, not only with his policies. so the two of them will be participating in mock debates. they've done two to date, and i'm sure they'll be doing a lot more up until wednesday, before they head to danville, kentucky, f

in kentucky. can paul ryan keep the republican momentum going in his face-off with joe biden? >> skrooip vice-presidential candidates joe biden get their chance when the two square off in kentucky in the one and only debate. and jason, let's first talk about, i guess it's been six weeks or so since the paul ryan selection. how well has he done on the ticket and added to the romney campaign? >> well, i think he's helped to energize republicans and i think he's helped romney and turned out to be a solid pick and the first role is do no harm and he's cleared that bar. i don't think he's helped as much in wisconsin, romney was hoping to get a pump there and maybe make it more competitive and the real clear politics average, up by about seven points and that hasn't panned out and put a bunch of ads out after the convention and wanted to put wisconsin in play and that hasn't worked out. overall, i think that ryan has been a solid pick and part of the debate and there's no evidence that it's harming the ticket. >> paul: kim, the poll right after the ryan pick for the two weeks leading up to the repu

biden topped 70 million americans. so the audience is huge. you have been in denver the past three days. what are you picking up from the romney team, from the obama campaign? >> i think the romney team is looking for a big night. they are looking for a game changer for all the talk about how it doesn't have to be everything. this is a big moment for this campaign. they sense nationally that they are on the verge of closing the gap. and in these battleground states some of these states seem like they are spreading apart like ohio. but they think this is a changing moment. i read one interview anecdotally about ann romney saying the first thing mitt romney does when he gets in these debate is he walks on stage, he puts the watch on the podium. he where is on the piece of paper, dad, because of his dad george romney also ran for president. then he finds ann romney in the crowd. and i think that that -- we'll be watching for that. how governor romney handles the first minutes of his persona tonight will make a big statement about how this whole thing goes. bill: thank you, bret, we'll see

think it is a very important moment. vice president biden will try very hard to retrospecktively discredit mitt romney's victory. he will say maybe obama was off his game a little. he won't say that but implication. all lies, deception, flip flopping, big mirage that you saw for 90 minutes. biden is going to come incredibly hard at romney. ryan has to defend romney and in effect consolidate romney's gains. like coming in in the second leg of a relay race. your team is ahead and you got to hold the lead and got to, of course, attack the obama biden record but above all sort of consolidate what romney did in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent? >> he is totally going to do that. not to ryan but to romney. if i were biden i would take all 45 minutes of the 90 minutes i have to attack romney both on the record and romney was wrong about the $5 trillion tax cut and doesn't do anything for the unsinced. uninsured. and raise things that obama didn't raise for
